For important information about LLNL appointments refer to the FAQs above. The Livermore Graduate Scholar Program (LGSP) provides graduate students at all PhD granting universities in the United States a unique opportunity to engage in collaborative research activities through employment assignments that are aligned with LLNL's mission and the student's thesis research.  This is a competitive program that develops strategic student and university partnerships focused on long-term DOE/NNSA needs. 

The Livermore Graduate Scholar Program (LGSP) provides graduate students at all Ph.D. granting universities in the United States a unique opportunity to engage in collaborative research activities through employment assignments that are aligned with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) mission and the student's thesis research.  This is a competitive program that develops strategic student and university partnerships focused on long-term DOE/NNSA needs.

Application Process
Prior to applying, the LGSP applicant must identify a team that will jointly plan and execute the student's assignment.  The team includes:
-the student
-the campus academic advisor
-an LLNL technical supervisor (preferably a scientist or engineer and ideally a member of the student's thesis committee)

Assignment
The student's success and the technical benefit to LLNL depend upon the close productive relationships of these three partners.  The student employee is paid a salary based upon working approximately 63% time year round.

Qualifications
- Must be a full-time graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. degree.
- Will be expected to have completed the majority of their graduate coursework, have successfully passed any required comprehensive examinations, and be in good standing (GPA) based on the home campus' standard requirements.  Students must also have the approval of their academic advisor to begin thesis research.
- Must possess good written and oral communication skills, and be able to write research papers for peer reviewed journals.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance: none or L depending upon location of assignment. (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subjected to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random testing.
