For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Materials Science and Engineering Post College Appointee. You will execute design, assembly, characterization, and experiments of novel micro-scale 3D printing technologies and materials. Project opportunities may include other additional research project areas with potentially different technical goals and include optical design and assembly, rheology of materials, precision motions control, and data analysis. This position is in the Advanced Materials and Processing Technologies Group in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
 
Essential Duties
- Conduct research and development of optical systems for micro-scale 3D printing over large areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments on optically based 3D printing systems.
- Characterize materials and structures fabricated from various micro-scale 3D printing technologies.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to accomplish research goals.
- Other duties as needed.
 
Qualifications
- Recent Bachelor’s (BS) or Master’s (MS) degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. (Within two years of application).
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: 3D printing technologies, SEM, optical microscopy, metrology of micro-scale structures, and optical assemblies.
- Broad general background in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with photocurable polymers, thermal post-processing of materials, and rheology.
- Experience with CAD, analytical modeling, and computational modeling such as finite element analysis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

 

Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee.  Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the Bachelor's or Master's degree at the time of the employment offer.
