For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Materials Engineer Post-College Appointee. You will execute on experiments and activities in the areasof physical metallurgy, materials processing, materials characterization, and materials process development to support various projects that support national security programs. You will conduct experiments to support process refinement and materials characterization for various funded projects.  This position is in the Materials and Non-Destructive Evaluation Section within the Materials Engineering Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Work under general guidance of staff metallurgists, in areas such as materials development, materials processing, and materials characterization, to resolve process problems and utilization of metals and alloys.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments to develop and improve the understanding of materials.
- Determine solutions to technical problems involving the processing and utilization of alloys by reviewing scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques.
- Disseminate results, including methods developed, and keep current on materials development/characterization methods.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related field.
- Broad general background in Materials Science and Engineering demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Experience conducting experiments related to the processing and characterization of materials.
- Experience with materials characterization techniques.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses and prepare, present and explain technical information and publications.
- Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

 

Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee.  Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the degree at the time of the employment offer.
